The Blue Hawaiian Cocktail

I will admit I am not a drinker. I may have a mixed drink, usually a fruity daiquiri, once a year. I’ve never cared much for the taste of alcohol. But some of these drinks are so just pretty. Some have alluring names. (See title above).

If it happens to be Elvis-related, I’m on it.

I’ve never had a Blue Hawaiian, but it looks delicious. Interestingly, it’s named after the 1961 Elvis movie Blue Hawaii and was invented in Hawaii in the late 1950s. However, the Mai Tai is the drink highlighted in that fun film.

I wonder if Elvis, who was not a drinker per se, ever had a Blue Hawaiian?

I will have a Blue Hawaiian someday – preferably while sitting on a picturesque beach. (A girl can dream, right? )

All the ingredients individually are tropical and yummy. Together, they sound like a delightful, delicious concoction.

So my friends, have you ever had this beautiful libation? Tell the truth – how is it?

  • 1 cup crushed ice
  • 2 fluid ounces of pineapple juice
  • 1 fluid ounce light rum
  • 1 fluid ounce blue Curacao liqueur
  • 1 fluid ounce cream of coconut
  • 1 pineapple slice
  • 1 maraschino cherry

(NOTE: Blue Hawaiian vs. Blue Hawaii)

You may think these two names can be used interchangeably, but they’re actually two different cocktails. Even though both cocktails have blue Curacao and rum, the Blue Hawaiian calls for cream of coconut while the Blue Hawaii calls for sweet and sour mix.

The recipe is mixed in a blender, with ice, until smooth. That’s it!
